November 13 – 17 is “LOVE YOUR BODY WEEK”
Our WRHS chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) is celebrating “NHSDA Love Your Body Week” – a national campaign to encourage body positivity and celebrate all the wonderful things our bodies can do. Footlight Dance is participating with our Creative Movement and Ballet classes, Tap & Hip Hop classes for our sixth year.
To support the consistent mission that Footlight Dance Centre believes “dance is for everyone”, for one week a year we are celebrating “Love Your Body Week” with the rest of the nation. Our instructors are taking time out of every class to intentionally foster body positivity with carefully planned activities and guidelines that have been established over a period of years. NHSDA host dance programs are encouraged to allow each of these exercises to culminate with the drawing or writing of a positive statement to be posted on the mirror, so that by the end of the week the mirror is completely covered in messages of self-love.
What we believe and work to accomplish at Footlight:
• Embrace and support of a diverse range of body shapes and body sizes. • Serve as a role model for healthy self-esteem and positive self-talk. • We are mindful of language used in corrections, and in other interactions with students. • Do not express approval of dancers for losing weight or talk about a dancer’s weight. • Encourage dancers to recognize and honor their own strengths and abilities instead of comparing themselves to other dancers. • We value progress, skills, and effort over appearance.
Our words to model after are: Acceptance, Compassion, Community, Courage, Vulnerability, Connection
We as a faculty are excited to continue this program and want you to be able to ask your dancers about their experience in class by being informed about our added activities outside of the normal technique, dance history and creative moving they do each week.
